Axiom Supports “Rebuilding Together”

May 1, 2006

Falls Church, Virginia. On a bright sunny morning of the last Saturday in April, staff members from Axiom Resource Management, Inc. began assembling on the front yards of two homes in Alexandria, Virginia. Wearing work boots and heavy gloves, and tools at the ready, shovels, rakes, and landscaping weapons in hand, the crews took up a variety of repairs and maintenance in support of their neighbors.

Before the sun began setting, as many as 50 Axiom professionals, smiling through the day’s sweat and grime, had completed a range much-needed repairs. At one home, Axiom team members prepped the kitchen, a bedroom, and the stucco front exterior and gave the house a sharp look with a fresh coat of paint.

At the second home, team members cut back trees and precarious overgrowth, installed a bathroom handicap railing, and closet organizers.

This year’s effort was organized by Axiom superstars Shaun DuGay, Doug Anderson, and Rob Wilson, who also led the work teams assigned to each home.

Each year since 2002, Axiom has participated Rebuilding Together, a nation-wide coalition of neighborhood organizations dedicated to giving a helping hand to elderly and disabled homeowners and to families with children who face unusual difficulties when the roof begins to leak or the front porch begins to sag. The organization, once known as Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April, has a simple goal: preserve these houses and ensure a warm, safe and dry home for families in need. Their method is equally simple: neighbors helping neighbors.

“These folks are our neighbors,” observed Carrie Mellin, a veteran of several Rebuilding Together efforts. “We live throughout the metropolitan area, but consider every nearby home a neighbor, and we’re happy to give back something to the neighborhoods that give so much to us.”

This year alone, Rebuilding Together helped rehabilitate some 105,000 houses and non-profit facilities nationwide. It was truly a national effort, with more than 2.5 million volunteers delivering services with greater than $1 billion in market value.

One morning next April, more teams of Axiom staff members will be assembling, ready to take on new tasks for other homeowners who deserve our support. “It is not too early,” said Doug Peardon, chief operating officer of Axiom, “to consider being one of these good neighbors.”
