Keymind Achieves SW-CMM® Level 2

October 26, 2005

Falls Church, Virginia. Axiom Resource Management, Inc., announced today that its Keymind Division has successfully completed a two-week assessment of its software development methodology and has satisfied the level two requirements of Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Software (SW) Capability Maturity Model (CMM).

According to the SEI, the overwhelming majority of custom built software products fail to perform as promised because software developers do not follow disciplined, repeatable processes. The Institute estimates that as many as 75 to 85 percent of the information technology industry operates in what it characterizes as “organized chaos.”

“Satisfying CMM’s level 2 requirements is an important achievement for nationally known IT companies,” said Doug Peardon, Axiom’s chief operating officer. “It’s practically unheard of among program management companies with in-house IT divisions.”

The SEI model identifies five stages that enterprises pass through as their software development processes reach full maturity. Most firms are mired in the “organized chaos” of stage one. In the final stage, organizations are capable of self-sustaining, continuous process improvement. In between, firms learn to document and track project costs, schedule all aspects of product functionality, integrate project management and software engineering processes, and develop detailed metrics for managing software development processes and products.
